Everton vs Chelsea

Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off saw Everton playing host to Chelsea.

The Toffees had been in dire form before kicking off at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Everton’s last outing saw them comprehensively beaten 5-2 by their bitter rivals Liverpool in midweek.

Marco Silva was then dismissed as Everton boss the following day with Duncan Ferguson the man tasked with managing Everton vs Chelsea.

As for Chelsea, they bounced back from two league defeats in a row by seeing off Aston Villa by two goals to one earlier this week.

The London outfit began the weekend 4th in the PL with a six-point advantage over 5th place Wolves.

Everton, on the other hand, started the day in the relegation zone.

The starting XI’s

Chelsea’s starting line-up was pretty standard with the biggest changes Jorginho and Fikayo Tomori dropping to the bench.

Meanwhile, Duncan Ferguson made two changes in his first starting eleven as Theo Walcott and Morgan Schneiderlin came in for Tom Davies and Yerry Mina.

Everton’s flying start

The sacking of Silva appeared to have an almost instant impact on Everton with Richarlison putting the Toffees 1-0 up inside five minutes on Saturday as the Brazilian headed home from a Djibril Sidibe cross.

While the early goal was obviously a major plus, Everton just generally looked a much more positive side in the opening exchanges at Goodison Park.

The Merseyside powerhouse were pressing well and keeping a normally expansive Chelsea side pegged back.

And when Frank Lampard’s side did manage to keep hold of the ball for a sustained period of time, there were little to no holes in the Everton side for Chelsea to exploit.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin then missed a big chance 15 minutes in to double Everton’s advantage.

The Englishman found himself one on one with Kepa but DCL hit it straight at the Spaniard.

Chelsea pressure

Everton’s defensive frailties would shine through shortly after Calvert-Lewin’s miss though when Michael Keane made a mistake in his box but Chelsea were unable to capitalise on his error.

And after the initial excitement of having a new boss wore off, Everton spend the second half of the first 45 pended back in their own half

Chelsea had another half-chance around the 30-minute mark when Willian played a good ball into the Everton box but Tammy Abraham wasn’t on the same page as the Brazilian.

Christian Pulisic then whipped a good ball across to Abraham moments later but the England international was unable to reach the cross.

However, despite their pressure, Chelsea were unable to break Everton down before the interval.

Ferguson to become permanent boss?

Everton would begin the second half much the same way they kicked off the tie though as Calvert-Lewin doubled Everton’s advantage three minutes after the break.

Chelsea’s response was almost instantaneous though as Mateo Kovacic placed his shot from outside the box 51 minutes in.

Mason Mount had a great chance to bring Chelsea back on level terms 64 minutes in but the midfielder placed his effort wide.

Mount had another solid chance with 79 minutes on the clock, but the midfielder’s shot was blocked by Mason Holgate.

With 10 minutes to go Lampard rolled the dice and brought right-back Reece James off for centre-forward, Michy Batshuayi.

But the change didn’t have the desired effect Lampard will have been hoping for as DCL added his second and Everton’s 3rd of the day to put the result beyond doubt.

Minus a few blips in the tie Everton put in a very solid display on Saturday vs a top-four side and should their form continue in this manner under Ferguson, perhaps he could be given the job on a permanent basis.
