Jurgen Klopp reacts to Liverpool’s Champions League draw

Liverpool draw Atletico

The 2019/20 Champions League last 16 draw took place on Monday.

Liverpool, the current holders of the CL, were included in the draw after topping Group E ahead of Napoli, RB Salzburg and Genk.

Liverpool have been handed a fairly tough test in the last 16 as they have been drawn against Spanish powerhouse, Atletico Madrid.

The Merseyside giants will travel to Atletico for the first leg on the 18th of February before hosting the return fixture on March 11th.

The last time these two sides met in a competitive match was way back in 2010. Liverpool would beat Atletico by two goals to one in a Europa League clash.

Klopp reacts

Here is what Jurgen Klopp had to say about drawing Atletico Madrid in the last 16:

“It’s an interesting draw. Before the draw I actually thought it would be Madrid – either one of the two clubs – and that’s the way it is.

“Madrid is the place where we only have fantastic memories, all of us, so that’s great, but this time we play Atletico there and it’s their home ground.

“It’s a tough one, but if you go through all of the draws, there are pretty much four or five potential finals already in the last 16.

“So, really, really good; a good draw, a difficult game like it should be, but how we most of the time think and say, I don’t think Mr Simeone is running through his living room and is happy that he got Liverpool.

“It will be a tough game. Two teams who are used to playing intense football, different styles and slightly different organisation of course, but both are ready for intensity and that makes it pretty tough for both.” As quoted by Liverpool’s official website.

The remaining Champions League last 16 fixtures

As for the remaining three Premier League sides in the CL last 16, they were also handed fairly tough games.

Manchester City have been drawn against Real Madrid in what should prove a fairly tough set of games for City.

Chelsea will face off with Bayern Munich in what will likely prove to be Lampard’s biggest test as a manager so far.

And Tottenham have arguably been handed the easiest CL last 16  draw out of the English sides as they are playing German outfit, RB Leipzig.

However, Leipzig have a young, hungry squad that will probably put up a much bigger fight than most people will be anticipating.

The full last 16 draw can be seen below.
