Chelsea’s defensive options

Antonio Rudiger had been a mainstay in Chelsea’s backline since his move from Serie A outfit AS Roma in 2017.

However, the towering central defender suffered an injury in April of 2019 that forced him to miss the back end of the 2018/19 campaign and the beginning of this season.

The German would return for Chelsea’s first-team vs Wolves on the 14th of September.

But Rudiger would manage just 45 minutes of action vs Nuno Santo’s side before picking up a groin injury and he has not featured for Chelsea’s senior side since.

With Rudiger still dealing with his injury woes, Frank Lampard has largely been deploying a young centre-back pairing of Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori.

And while both players have been pretty decent this season, Chelsea are struggling to keep clean sheets.

The London outfit have managed just one shutout in their last seven league outings.

Nathan Ake to Chelsea?

So, given Chelsea haven’t been too great at the back this season, perhaps Chelsea fans will be hoping to see some defensive reinforcements brought in in the near future.

One player Chelsea are reportedly looking at is Nathan Ake.

The Dutch defender has flourished at Bournemouth since departing Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis back in 2017.

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea believe they can re-sign Ake for around £40m.

However, the same report from the Telegraph claims Lampard will assess Antonio Rudiger’s form and fitness before deciding whether to pursue Ake in January.
