Lionel Messi labels Sadio Mane’s 4th-placed Ballon d’Or finish ‘a shame’: ‘He had an exceptional year’

Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has today hinted that Liverpool star Sadio Mane was deserving of a higher finish than 4th in the award’s final standings.

Messi makes history

The latest edition of the ‘Golden Ball’ ceremony took place in Paris this past Monday.

The event sees the finest 30 players from around the globe over the course of the calendar year come together with hopes of being crowned France Football’s Ballon d’Or winner.

In the buildup to Monday’s gala, two players stood as the runaway favourites to clinch the award, in the form of Lionel Messi and Virgil van Dijk.

As such, it came as little surprise when the final-4 came down to the aforementioned Barcelona and Liverpool stars, along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane.

In the end, though, there could only be one winner, with Messi having eventually clinched the Ballon d’Or for a record-breaking 6th time:

Van Dijk finished 2nd in the standings, with Ronaldo having beaten out Mane for a place in the top-3:

One individual who appears to be of the opinion that Mane was perhaps deserving of a higher final placing than 4th, though, is Lionel Messi.

Speaking in an interview with Canal+ on the back of his latest crown, the Argentine revealed his admiration for Mane, labelling the Liverpool attacker missing out on a podium place ‘a shame’:

‘It’s a shame to see Mane finish in fourth place.’

‘But I think there have been a lot of great players this year. That’s why it was difficult to choose a particular player.’

Messi actually voted for Mane at the no.1 spot for FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award earlier this year, with the Barcelona star having continued:

‘I chose Sadio Mane because he’s a player that I like.’

‘Mane achieved a great year that was exceptional for the entire Liverpool team. That’s why I chose him.’

‘I repeat, there were a lot of very great players this year, so the choice was difficult.’
