Premier League table-toppers Liverpool have this afternoon confirmed the extent of the injury picked up by midfielder Fabinho during the club’s meeting with Napoli.
Jurgen Klopp’s men welcomed Serie A giants Napoli to Anfield on Wednesday night, for their penultimate Champions League group E outing.
The two sides headed into proceedings separated by just a point in the table, with hosts Liverpool having held the advantage.
The reverse fixture in Naples back in September, though, saw Napoli emerge 2-0 victors.
And, when all was said and done on Merseyside two nights ago, Liverpool again struggled to get the better of Carlo Ancelotti’s talented Partenopei.
After Dries Mertens put the visitors ahead with 20 minutes on the clock, Dejan Lovren levelled things up just past the hour-mark.
Liverpool failed to find an all-important winner over the course of the remaining half-hour, though, meaning 3rd-placed Red Bull Salzburg could still oust the Reds from the Champions League with a final day victory in Austria.
The European champions’ failure to secure their spot in the last-16 of football’s elite club competition, however, was far from the only negative to have stemmed from Wednesday’s matchup.
Liverpool were also dealt an early blow on the injury front, as star midfielder Fabinho was forced off with an ankle problem.
The Brazilian, who has played an integral role in the Merseysiders’ fortunes over the early months of the campaign, fell awkwardly following a challenge with 18 minutes on the clock, before eventually being replaced by Gini Wijnaldum.
As such, Liverpool have this afternoon provided an update on Fabinho’s fitness.
And it is far from positive news.
It has been confirmed that the Reds’ midfield general suffered ankle ligament damage versus Napoli, and is set to be out of action until the new year:
‘Liverpool can confirm Fabinho suffered ankle ligament damage during the Champions League encounter with Napoli in midweek.’
‘Further assessment on the injury has discovered Fabinho will be out of action until the New Year.’
