Liverpool’s Nat Phillips to rejoin Stuttgart on loan, two weeks after Anfield return

As confirmed across social media this afternoon, Liverpool defender Nat Phillips is set to move back to Stuttgart on loan imminently.

Liverpool stint

Phillips, a 22-year-old stopper, has been on the books of the Reds since 2016.

After opting to depart Bolton’s youth setup, the then-free agent was snapped up by the Merseyside giants, and assigned to the club’s academy.

The seasons that followed saw Phillips impress those in charge at Anfield, eventually resulting in Jurgen Klopp opting to call the Englishman up to train with his senior squad in the summer of 2018.

Phillips continued to develop with Liverpool’s reserves over the course of the campaign, but struggled for first-team opportunities.

He was, though, actually an unused member of the Reds’ Champions League final squad last season.

Stuttgart switch

With a quartet of central-defenders still firmly ahead of Phillips in the pecking order of Jurgen Klopp ahead of the current campaign, however, it was decided that a loan spell away from Anfield would best serve the 22-year-old’s development.

As such, Phillips was farmed out to German 2nd division outfit Stuttgart during the summer.

The former Bolton man had since managed 11 appearances across all competitions for the former Bundesliga giants.

Liverpool return and 2nd departure

However, amid a central-defensive injury crisis at Anfield of late, Phillips’ loan stint was subsequently cut short at the beginning of the month, with the stopper having joined back up with Jurgen Klopp’s squad on the 1st of January.

Phillips went on to start in Liverpool’s FA Cup victory over Merseyside rivals Everton last weekend, whilst also being named on the bench for the Reds’ Premier League wins over Sheffield United and Spurs.

But, as outlined above, it has since been confirmed by the likes of the reliable Neil Jones and more that the 22-year-old’s spell back on Merseyside will prove short lived.

Incredibly, on the back of just a solitary appearance, Phillips is set to return to Stuttgart on loan this coming week, presumably until the finish of the campaign:
