Man United failed in last-ditch Julian Brandt swoop – MEN

As per a report from the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United were rebuffed in a late inquiry for now-Borussia Dortmund star Julian Brandt.

Brandt’s rise to stardom

Brandt, a versatile midfielder who can also play on the wing, spent his entire career to date, up until yesterday, on Bayer Leverkusen’s books.

After first breaking into the first-team setup of Die Werkself as a raw starlet during the 2013/14 campaign, Brandt subsequently went on to establish himself as one of the most highly-regarded young players in Germany over the seasons since.

The technically-gifted 22-year-old possesses a number of impressive attributes, with his creative spark, eye for goal and wand of a right foot having enabled Brandt to rack up an impressive 10 goals and 12 assists across all competitions this season.

Dortmund’s decisive transfer dealings

And the German’s stellar showings at the BayArena certainly didn’t go unnoticed across Europe.

Recent weeks saw Brandt heavily-linked with a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool and Tottenham both named as keen admirers.

The English giants, in the end, though, missed out, as Borussia Dortmund made the Leverkusen standout their 3rd signing in the space of a week, following the additions of Nico Schulz and Thorgan Hazard:

United miss out

As per the aforementioned report from the Manchester Evening News, though, another Premier League club are also said to have failed in a late swoop for Brandt.

The outfit in question are Ole Gunnar Solaker’s Manchester United.

The Red Devils’ board are reported to have made contact with their Leverkusen counterparts last week, but were informed that they had left their move too late:

‘United touched base with Bayer Leverkusen to ask about Brandt’s availability, only to discover he had chosen to move to Dortmund last week.’

Brandt’s signing, which saw Dortmund take advantage of a 25 million Euro clause in the German’s Leverkusen contract, could well prove to be a masterstroke on the part of the BVB hierarchy.
