Wolves held by Newcastle

Wolves played host to Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

Nuno Santo’s side headed into the tie experiencing a small dip in form after losing their previous two Premier League outings.

And Wolves’ misfortunes looked set to continue on Saturday as well when Miguel Almiron fired Newcastle into the lead with seven minutes on the clock.

However, Wolves would respond fairly quickly and draw things level in the 14th minute.

But Wolves were unable to penetrate Newcastle’s goal again with the tie eventually ending 1-1.

That draw would put Wolves three points adrift of 5th place Manchester United.

After the clash, Nuno Santo praised a ‘well organised’ Newcastle side and their keeper:

“(It was) not so good. Newcastle were well organised. We didn’t start the game well. We reacted well to the goal and after that we managed better. We created chances but not as many as usual but not as many as normal.

“We tried until the end. Newcastle’s ‘keeper played a fantastic game today which allowed them to stay in the game. Like I said, not the best, but the character and will was there.” As quoted by the Birmingham Mail.

Nuno on transfers

After the draw, Santo would also speak briefly about transfers with the Wolves boss claiming it is obvious that they must bring in players:

“We are speaking about this every time I sit down with you. It’s obvious that we must bring players.

“We are working on that. Hopefully things work out and we can solve it.” As quoted by the Birmingham Mail.

With Wolves competing in the Europa League this campaign, they have already played a staggering 37 games across all competitions this term.

And while Wolves do have some quality players, a case could be made that their squad depth is somewhat lacking.

Take their centre-forward spot as an example. With Patrick Cutrone joining Fiorentina on loan earlier this week, Wolves now have just Raul Jimenez as an out-and-out senior striker.
