Arsenal have today confirmed that veteran defender Nacho Monreal has departed the club to join La Liga outfit Real Sociedad.

Arsenal stint

33-year-old left-back Monreal had been on the books at the Emirates for 6 years.

The veteran joined Arsenal from Malaga in January of 2013, subsequently going on to play a key role in the club’s fortunes.

After working his way into a starting role under Arsene Wenger during his debut campaign in north London, Monreal’s increasingly-impressive displays over the years that followed eventually led to the Spaniard cementing himself as a mainstay in the Gunners’ backline.

Perfectly summing up his importance to the Arsenal cause was the fact that, between 2015 and 2017, Monreal started in 71 of the capital giants’ 76 Premier League fixtures.

The last couple of seasons, particularly 2018/19, though, saw the stopper’s game-time begin to dip.

Amid competition from Sead Kolasinac, Monreal started in just 21 of Arsenal’s league outings last time out.

The 22-time capped Spanish international’s age also appears to be slowly catching up with him, with Monreal’s performances having often been lacking when compared to his form of the past.

La Liga return

As such, despite having been handed starts by Unai Emery in the Gunners’ first three outings of the new season, rumours had been rampant of late that Monreal was set to be on the move before the close of the European transfer window this coming Monday.

Widespread reports stemming from Spain suggested that Real Sociedad were closing on a deal for the 33-year-old.

With Sead Kolasinac having returned to the Arsenal fold, and Kieran Tierney having completed a deadline day move to north London from Scottish champions Celtic, Monreal was evidently labelled as an expendable asset by the Gunners’ brass.

As such, the stopper’s exit being made official this morning has since come as little surprise.

In an announcement across the club’s social media channels, Arsenal confirmed that Monreal has joined Real Sociedad on a permanent basis:

No financial details regarding the move have been revealed.

Elneny on the move

In other Gunners transfer news, meanwhile, Mohamed Elneny has also secured an exit from the Emirates.

The Egyptian midfielder’s move, though, is only on loan.

Elneny is set to spend the 2019/20 campaign with Turkish giants Besiktas:
