Patrick Vieira admits ‘you can never ignore’ Arsenal amid return links

Patrick Vieira has briefly opened up on the possibility of taking up the managerial reins at former club Arsenal.

Emery sacked

On the back of a dismal start to the campaign, the news that Gunners fans across the globe were waiting for finally arrived last week.

Following a 2-1 Europa League defeat at home to Eintracht Frankfurt, Unai Emery was relieved of his duties at the Emirates.

Ljungberg struggling

Club legend Freddie Ljungberg has since been appointed interim Arsenal boss, with the reliable David Ornstein having confirmed earlier this week that the possibility of the Swede being handed the role on a permanent basis couldn’t be ruled out:

This, though, was before the north Londoners fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton on Thursday.

Their side’s latest loss has since seen many Arsenal fans call Ljungberg’s credentials into question, with the former winger having no prior experience of management at the top level.

‘Can never ignore a club where you’ve spent nine years’

As such, a number of alternative appointments on the bench at the Emirates continue to be touted in the media.

These include the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Mikel Arteta and Max Allegri.

Another name to have circulated in some circles, meanwhile, has been that of Patrick Vieira.

Arsenal legend Vieira is currently in charge of Ligue 1 outfit Nice in his home country, with Les Aiglons sitting 13th in the French top-flight as things stand.

Speaking on the back of his side’s 4-1 win over Metz yesterday, though, Vieira was drawn on the prospect of departing the Allianz Riviera, to make a return to north London.

And, during an interview with Canal+, the 43-year-old refused to rule out the possibility:

‘You can never ignore a club where you’ve spent nine years.’

Vieira, though, was also keen to reiterate his happiness at Nice:

‘But, honestly, I’m focused on this project at Nice, I feel very good here. It’s a very exciting project.’

‘I’ve always said that I’m very happy in Nice. We’re all working to move the club forward and there is potential.’
