Both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal head into Sunday’s north London derby off the back of damaging defeats.
Spurs crashed to a shock defeat at home to Newcastle, whilst Arsenal were comfortably put to the sword by Liverpool.
Ahead of the massive derby at the Emirates this weekend, Paul Merson has tipped his former side Arsenal to ‘win comfortably’.
Merson: Tottenham already out the title race
Steve Bruce’s Newcastle produced one of the biggest shocks of the season as they won away at Tottenham.
For Spurs, it proved to be one of the least inspiring performances of Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure.
After the defeat, Mauricio Pochettino went on a worrying rant about the lack of unity within his squad.
The defeat now leaves them trailing Premier League leaders Liverpool by five points.
According to Merson, that already rules them out of the title race, with the gap too substantial to reduce.
Merson told Sky Sports:
I must admit, I didn’t see this coming – Tottenham losing at home to Newcastle.
Spurs look in disarray, a worrying sign this early in the season.
They are out of the title race already, five points behind Liverpool with three games played.
People go on and on about there being 35 games left but I’m fed up with that rhetoric, five points is a lot of points to make up.
Liverpool lost once last season and have won every game so far this, so where are Spurs going to bridge the gap?
Merson: I expect Arsenal to beat Tottenham comfortably
Controversially, Merson is predicting another comfortable Arsenal win at the Emirates on Sunday.
The former Arsenal player believes the Gunners have made a pleasing start to the season, aside from losing to Liverpool.
But, despite Spurs looking in disarray, their record at Arsenal alone should give Merson the confidence to predict such an outcome.
Arsenal have won 8 of the 13 league meetings at the Emirates, whilst Tottenham have won just once.
A couple of weeks ago I’d have looked at Sunday’s North London derby and said Arsenal would be happy with a draw.
But after their positive start to the season, I expect them to win comfortably now.
