Monreal’s Arsenal stint

Nacho Monreal joined Arsenal in January of 2013 from Spanish outfit Malaga.

The Gunners are believed to have paid around £9m for his services.

In total, Monreal has featured 251 times for Arsenal across all competitions, in which he has scored 10 and assisted 20.

The Spaniard has also earned three FA Cups and three Community Shields during his time in North London.

Monreal is now 33 years of age and his current Arsenal deal runs out in July of 2020.

Monreal to Sociedad

Arsenal did sign another left-back this summer, Kieran Tierney.

However, the Scotsman is currently sidelined with an injury and has yet to feature for his new club.

It has been reported that Tierney could be out of action until October.

This has lead to Monreal starting Arsenal’s first three league games of the new season at left-back.

However, Arsenal could be set to lose Monreal soon.

While the Premier League transfer window is already shut, the European transfer window is open until Monday, September 2nd.

As a result, Monreal can still leave the Emirates this summer with the Evening Standard reporting that Real Sociedad are pushing hard to sign Monreal before the window shuts on Monday.

While Arsenal would be somewhat short-staffed at left-back if they sell Monreal and Tierney remains out till October, the Gunners are said to be considering it, the report from the ES explained why:

Arsenal are considering sanctioning the sale of Monreal due to the fact he has one year to run on his contract and they risk losing him for free next summer.
