Romelu Lukaku takes to IG to respond to racist chants from Cagliari fans

Inter Milan star Romelu Lukaku has today taken to social media to post a heartfelt response to the racist abuse that he suffered during the Nerazzurri’s win over Cagliari.

Cagliari 1-2 Inter

Antonio Conte’s men travelled to Sardinia last night, for their 2nd Serie A outing of the campaign.

Inter headed into proceedings no doubt brimming with confidence, having romped to a 4-0 victory over Lecce in their season opener.

And the club’s solid start to life under new boss Antonio Conte continued at the Sardegna Arena, as a hard-fought contest eventually saw the visitors emerge with a 2-1 win.

Inter took the lead with 27 minutes on the clock, through Argentine attacker Lautaro Martinez.

Hosts Cagliari, though, soon fought back, before drawing level courtesy of Joao Pedro early in the second-half.

The Nerazzurri’s new-found fighting spirit was on show as the second-half wore on, however, leading to an all-important winner from the spot 20 minutes from time.

‘Instead of going forward, we’re going backwards’

Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, was the player to have converted Inter’s penalty, marking his 2nd goal in two competitive outings for his new club.

The circumstances surrounding the Belgian’s spot-kick, though, have since been catching the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Before slotting home his side’s winner, Lukaku was subjected to a barrage of racist abuse from sections of Cagliari’s ‘fans’:

This comes after Juventus stars Blaise Matuidi and Moise Kean were both also targeted by the home support at the Sardegna Arena last season.

As such, Romelu Lukaku has since taken to social media to react to the appalling situation.

In a post on his official Instagram account, the former Manchester United hitman called for action from ‘football federations all over the world’, before reaching out to his fellow professionals, to ‘unify’ and ‘make a statement’:
