Vertonghen on his absence
Tottenham hosted Aston Villa in their first game of the 2019/20 Premier League season.
After going 1-0 down against the newly-promoted side, Spurs eventually came back to win 3-1.
One of the more noticeable absences from Tottenham’s matchday squad vs Villa was Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgian only made Spurs’ bench in their proceeding two games vs Manchester City and Newcastle.
The Evening Standard stated that Mauricio Pochettino reportedly felt Vertonghen wasn’t as fit as his other centre-backs.
However, Vertonghen has told the ES that he came back fit and did not miss a training session. He instead claims his omission from the Villa matchday squad was tactical:
“No, no, no – I came back fit. I played in every pre-season game and I didn’t miss a [training] session.
“Like the manager explained before the first game against Villa, it was a tactical decision and I respect that decision. We players have to accept his decisions. I’m very, very happy to be back.” As quoted by the Evening Standard.
Vertonghen started vs Arsenal
Jan Vertonghen’s first game back was on Sunday in the North London derby.
Spurs would take a 2-0 lead at the Emirates thanks to goals from Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane.
However, goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rescued Unai Emery’s side a point on the day.
