The reliable Simon Stone has this afternoon provided an update on the situation surrounding Paul Pogba’s imminent surgery, as well as the potential ramifications on Manchester United’s transfer plans this month.
Arsenal down United
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men travelled to the Emirates last night, for a high-profile Premier League meeting with Arsenal.
The Red Devils headed into the clash with spirits high, on the back of comprehensive successive victories over Newcastle and Burnley.
When all was said and done in north London, however, United were brought firmly back down to earth.
An utterly-dominant showing on the part of Arsenal eventually saw the Gunners put the visitors to the sword by 2 goals to nil.
Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis Papastathopoulos bagged the goals, as Manchester United’s top-4 hopes took a blow.
Highlights: Arsenal 2-0 Man United
Key to the Red Devils’ disappointing display last night was an altogether sub-par showing from the club’s midfield.
Nemanja Matic, Fred and Jesse Lingard were handed starts by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the Emirates, with the trio having been completely dominated by Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil.
Missing from United’s ranks in the middle of the park, though, were key pair Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba.
While the former had been expected to miss the matchup after picking up a knee issue versus Newcastle, though, there had been hope that Pogba may feature versus Arsenal.
The French international only recently returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury.
But, ahead of kick-off last night, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dropped a bombshell on fans of the club, in confirming that Pogba is set to be out of action ‘for a few weeks’, having suffered a recurrence of his ankle injury:
‘[Pogba]’s injured. He’s feeling some discomfort in his ankle. He’ll be out for a few weeks.’
The bad news continued following the full-time whistle at the Emirates, when it was subsequently revealed that Pogba is set to go under the knife to resolve his recurring ankle issue.
And now, as outlined above, the reliable Simon Stone has this afternoon provided an update on the situation.
Pogba, along with ‘his people’, came to the collective decision to go ahead with surgery.
Manchester United’s position regarding transfers this month, though, remains unchanged.
The Red Devils are still said to be looking to strengthen in midfield, as well as other areas, but seemingly anticipate ‘a tricky market’.
Re Pogba, @ManUtd did the scans. Club, player + ‘his people’ agree surgery needed. Timing the obv issue. Player within his rights to say go now + not risk making it worse. Club position re Jan window unchanged. Looking to strengthen midfield and other areas but a tricky market.
