Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp this afternoon provided an update on the fitness of both Georginio Wijnaldum and Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool back in action
The Reds are set to get their Club World Cup campaign underway tomorrow evening.
Liverpool will go head-to-head with Mexican outfit Monterrey, in a semi-final clash.
The matchup of course comes as one of two fixtures in the space of 24 hours for Jurgen Klopp’s men, with the Merseyside giants also set to take on Aston Villa in the League Cup tonight.
As a result of their wide-ranging commitments, Liverpool have been forced to split the club’s squad into two groups, with Reds U23 boss Neil Critchley set to oversee a largely 2nd-string panel at Villa Park in a few hours’ time.
The club’s senior players, meanwhile, have travelled to Qatar, for the Club World Cup.
Wijnaldum ruled out
As such, speaking in a press conference in Doha this afternoon, Jurgen Klopp provided a fitness update on his squad, set to take on Monterrey.
First, the German tactician confirmed that Gini Wijnaldum, who was forced off during the Premier League leaders’ victory over Watford at the weekend, is set to miss out tomorrow evening:
‘Gini was not as serious as we thought in the first moment. So he’s here doing the first recovery and then we have stuff what is necessary.’
‘So we will see day by day but for tomorrow night he’s not involved.’
There was positive news on Virgil van Dijk, on the other hand, with the Dutch stopper fit to feature from the off:
‘Virgil is fine. We had to do different stuff for recovery for different people, so that was the reason why he was not involved yesterday in the session. But Virgil is fine. All the rest of the squad is fine.’
