Arsenal manager Unai Emery last night dropped the latest hint that Mesut Ozil is not part of his plans, after leaving the German out of the club’s squad that put Standard Liege to the sword.
The Gunners welcomed Belgian giants Liege to the Emirates, for their 2nd Europa League outing of the campaign.
Arsenal’s European opener had seen the capital giants secure an impressive 3-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Their opponents last night, meanwhile, had also picked up all 3 points on matchday 1, courtesy of a 2-0 defeat of Vitoria SC.
When all was said and done in north London last night, though, Arsenal took firm control of the Group F table.
The clash was all-but ended as a contest within the opening 22 minutes, as a blistering start on the part of the hosts saw them race out to a 3-0 lead.
18-year-old summer signing Gabriel Martinelli proved the star of the show, notching a superb brace inside a quarter of an hour to set Unai Emery’s men on their way.

Joe Willock then made sure of all 3 points with an excellent finish of his own just past the 20-minute mark, before Dani Ceballos put a touch of gloss on the scoreline with Arsenal’s 4th in the second-half.
‘Others deserve it more’
On the back of his side’s impressive display last night, meanwhile, Gunners boss Unai Emery was subsequently drawn on his team selection, with a particular emphasis on Mesut Ozil.
Gifted midfielder Ozil was omitted from the matchday squad to face Standard, as he had been when Arsenal visited Old Trafford on Monday night.
Emery, though, was blunt in his response, simply revealing that other members of his sizable squad were more deserving of selection than Ozil:
‘I am thinking every time the best players for the match. When I decided he isn’t in the squad it’s because other players deserve it more.’
The Spanish tactician continued:
‘What does he have to do? Continue working.’
‘Sunday we have another match. We are going to decide again.’
Asked Emery about why Ozil was not in the squad
“It’s because other players deserve it more.”
