Three summer signings also received their first starts for Everton at Molineux.

In midfield, both Fabian Delph and Alex Iwobi were selected.

Up-top, Moise Kean was picked for his first start with the Toffees.

Why Matt Doherty missed the Everton game

One of the surprises in the Wolves XI was the complete absence of Matt Doherty from the matchday squad.

Doherty was also missing on Thursday as Wolves beat Torino in the Europa League.

After that match, manager Nuno Espirito Santo discussed the Irish international’s fitness:

He’s not 100 per cent, he’s been struggling, but Matt is one case and we have to take care of him, use him when we decide we should us him, and when he’s ready to go he will go again.

Impact on Ireland

Matt Doherty was selected by Mick McCarthy for an upcoming Euro 2020 qualifier against the Swiss.

It’s unclear whether Doherty will now pull out of the squad.
